Wright Houses in Long Beach

Question from Kurt:
I’ve been contracted to write National Register nominations for a number of properties designed by John Lloyd Wright in Long Beach, IN. In order to do this the state has asked me to write a document on JLW. One of the owners told me he had a daughter who had written a book on him. I have been searching, unsuccessfully, to find this book, or his daughter. But I found your website. Could you help point me in the right direction-pun not intended!

Answer from Pat:
I am the step daughter-in-law of John Lloyd Wright. (His last wife Frances Lloyd Wright was my husband’s mother.) I live in the home he designed for us which my husband and I built in 1956. I am currently finishing a book which includes some descriptions of the Wrights. They were colorful characters and I lived next door to them for 28 years. I still live in the beautiful home Lou and I built which was designed by John. My husband Judge Louis M. Welsh passed away 15 years ago.

Years ago I visited Shangri-La which John designed for Frances on the shores of Lake Michigan when she was married to her second husband, Frank Welsh. I also saw the Cold Stream School (hope I have the name right!) which he designed and which has since been torn down.

There is some website material on John on the Internet. A former apprentice of John’s is Len Rosenberg, Architect: ministryarchitecture@hotmail.com

As a beginning here is a link to material regarding Elizabeth Wright Ingraham.

I will send you some other links later. This is enough to get you started. After John’s and Frances’ deaths, Lou and I gave some Wright materials to the Wright Home and Studio and we gave John’s plans, letters, Wright clippings, and other materials to the Chicago Historical Society.

John wrote a book called “My Father Who is On Earth.” Frank Lloyd Wright pencilled comments into it. John pencilled in replies. After the Wright’s died, Lou and I donated this book to the Avery Architectural Library of Columbia University. They published a lovely edition with kind mention of Lou and me and the comments from Frank and John Wright in the margins of the book. Some hardback copies are available on the Internet but I am not sure which edition is being sold.
