Brazilian Pepper Tree

Gardening Question from Nancy:

Bouganvillia has invasive roots like the pepper tree – can it be planted near/under the pepper tree and survive.  pepper tree is on  neighbors’ bank and is killing the star white jasmine I have planted on my iron fence to serve as a green barrier between our houses.

Answer from Pat:

Bougainvillea needs full sun and reflected heat to do well. It does not survive in shade and needs water and fertilizer for the first three years to get established.
You have a choice: 1. Feed the star jamine now with Osmocote 14-14-14 and water it a lot more or 2. Replace the star jasmine with something artificial such as green slats used by tennis courts that look like plant materials pulled through or attached to the fence.
