Hummingbirds

Question from Cynthia:

Hello! I live in an apartment and have a balconey. I’d like to have a plant/tree that would attract hummingbirds. Can you give me some suggestions?

Answer from Pat:

I suggest Fuchsia ‘Gartenmeister Bonstedt’, cigar plant (Cuphea ignea) or red coral plant (Russellia equisetiformiis.) All are long-blooming and easy to grow in 18-inch tubs.

  1. Thank you so much!
I can’t wait to get some!!!

    • Hope you have fun with this. I can feel your excitement. Cuphea often stays in bloom year round. Russellia blooms in waves, and ‘Gartenmeister Bonstedt blooms all summer.
Be sure to feed the Russellia and the fuchsia. The cuphea seems to thrive on neglect.

      • Is direct sunlight okay for all three? The balcony has no shade at all.

        • Depending on where you live, yes. Try all three and see how they do. That fuchsia is known as the “sun” fuchsia. It’s a bushy shrub and I’ve seen it on sale recently. When I said cuphea thrives on neglect I only mean that I know one that NEVER gets fed and it still blooms. It would do even better with occasional feeding.

          • Hahahahaha, I will do that then. I live in Norwalk….I’ll have to check online for nurseries somewhere near me.
