Art Brings Community Together
A Mixed-Media
Mural is being constructed in Del Mar, California, by Art Partners,
Pat Welsh and Betsy Schulz and a group of enthusiastic volunteers.
Artists, business people, homemakers, Master Gardeners, and
few children are joining together in the joyous task of creating
a work of art. The mural began as an idea and almost miraculously
received a generous grant of matching funds from the County
of San Diego, soon followed by the City of Del Mar, other supportive
groups, and individuals. Designed by Welsh and Schulz, the
project took off like a rocket, boueyed by a spirit of adventure
in which many people are taking part.
Welsh and Schulz, inspired by mixed-media mosaics of Mediterranean
cultures and old-time California, decided on a simple color scheme
of terra cotta, black,
turquoise, and white. They translated this color scheme into modern times and
local materials. With the help of a few volunteer artists they created over
30 original base-relief sculptures, in fired terra cotta clay, of birds, fishes,
animals, and trees of the region. These, combined with sliced bricks; black
Mexican river rock; glazed tile mosaic; and "found" objects (including
rusty farm machinery, old gears, and community memorabilia), are used to tell
a visual story.
The theme is the layers of rock under the sea, the land, the sea, the sky,
and some of the birds, animals, and plants native to our region. A homage to
nature, it's appropriate for Del Mar, a community of nature lovers.
Welsh, Schulz, and all the volunteers hope that the people of Del Mar and of
the County of San Diego and visitors from near and far, especially the children,
will enjoy the Del Mar Library Wall Mixed-Media Mural for many years to come.
The mural
is located on the retaining wall in front of the Del Mar Public
Library on Camino Del Mar (Old 101) between 14th and 13th Streets.
